If you want to walk on water…
You’ve got to get out of the boat. Whenever following Jesus has become boring and predictable, we should ask ourselves whether we’re stepping out enough into new and sometimes scary places where we’re giving Jesus the opportunity to remind us of his reality. It takes trust in God and it develops our trust in God further when we break out from what we know and where we know our contribution. We may not know the outcome or the result of taking that step, but the promise of his presence is secure.
If you’re not sure what step to make, give your hunger to God and let him reveal to you and call you out. There’s no point forcing something, but he’ll let you know in his time, or cause a desire and hunger – a holy discontent – to grow within you.
If you have stepped out of the boat, look out for the evidences of his grace and the reminders of his presence; they’ll build encouragement within you and others who you travel with. It’s these moments that will give you a story to tell. After all, following Jesus isn’t safe, but its good.

I hope this reply will reach Wayne. I felt prompted to get in touch this morning, having read your resume at TBC on Sunday evening. Your blog thoughts on stepping out of the boat ring very true. Its always been the case for me that when I have climbed out on what looks like a thin shakey branch, I have found God to be there already with His arms outstretched to me but only once I have started to climb.
I just wanted to encourage you and say that I recall you preached at an evening service a few months back and I then thought you were the man for the job. I have heard friends in Pembury speak very well of you and I very much look forward to your joining us at TBC.
Be blessed and a blessing and have a good day.
Steve
Thanks for commenting Steve. Jem and I are really excited about the possibility of moving to TBC and I’m really enjoying getting to know people each time I visit. I look forward to catching up with you sometime – this is definitely a ‘step out of the boat’ season for us!
God bless,
Wayne
